- Presentation by Regional Director to (approx) 12 regional schools in recognition of their literacy and numeracy achievements
- Each school will make a presentation describing their journey. These presentations will be set up as exhibitions. Spectators will have the opportunity to discuss the presentation with the exhibitors – as they move around. A people's choice award will be made for the best presentation.

- An environmental day at the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre focussing on environmental literacy and numeracy. Students will be drawn from the Wollongong/Shellharbour areas
- Students will be assisted in recording suitable images for the follow-up activity
- The regional Aboriginal Education Strategy poster will be a focus for visual literacy and understanding

- Mathematics Challenges for Stage 4 in five locations across the Riverina. These challenges require an understanding of mathematical ideas, skills, and techniques.

- Students develop problem solving skills and learn to work mathematically, showing progress in critical thinking. Teachers will be provided with opportunities to network.

- Collate book of numeracy problems linked to the syllabus through Key Ideas. The book will assist teachers in identifying and addressing the numeracy needs of their students in a planned whole-school approach. These activities are also designed to make maths relevant and fun.

- Primary students and teachers

- Teachers will be supported in developing and applying optimum teaching practices. Teachers will be able to assess students working mathematically displaying consistent teacher judgement.
|
- Production of a CD which provides Departmental support documents in literacy for Board of Studies syllabuses and the Teaching Standards Framework. This resource will also support the regional priority of accelerated literacy (Scaffolding). In this form, equitable distribution of these resources will be achieved for all teachers, reaching all school settings from P6 to high school.

- Primary and secondary K-10 students and teachers

- Teachers develop a balanced integrated approach to the teaching of reading, writing, talking and listening. Consistent teacher judgement and appropriate assessment techniques will be developed. In particular, emphasis on addressing the needs of early career teachers will be instigated. These teachers will be provided with explicit instruction in the teaching of literacy, with a particular emphasis on reading.

- Information Morning Tea to provide schools and participating teachers with an overview of this year's regional initiative
- Students (K-10) are invited to take on the challenge of producing original literary texts based on the wonders of science
- Students, with the help of their teachers and/or other members of the school community, will create texts that explore one or more scientific phenomena
- The picture book Science Verse by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith will be the inspiration for this project
- Whole-day Professional Learning Support Workshop to provide professional learning to teachers and students to assist in the production of original literary texts based on the wonders of science

- Improve students' writing, visual and multimodal literacy around mathematical concepts that are connected to real-life contexts and problems

- Celebration day for schools to present their texts and to acknowledge their efforts through the presentation of awards across a number of categories. A high profile speaker and afternoon sessions for parents/community members will also be a feature of the day.

- Schools will participate in activities to promote understanding of vocabulary, spelling and working mathematically

- Afternoon project briefings to interested school executive to encourage and support their involvement in the activity. Schools will receive a support package which will enable them to participate meaningfully in this NLNW activity.

- Students will apply knowledge and skills of spelling, expand their vocabulary and work mathematically as learnt in the classroom (K-10 English Syllabuses and K-10 Mathematics Syllabuses) in a real world context.
|
- Teachers will teach appropriate numeracy and literacy skills that will enable students to play Scrabble effectively and strategically, and keep accurate scores
|
|
|
- Schools will organise a Scrabble competition at the school level to determine students who will represent their school at a regional level in each stage. Regional staff will organise a Regional round robin competition with a grand final round.
|
- Schools that become involved will receive consultancy support as needed
|
Numeracy
- Teachers will demonstrate and teach strategies that will develop students' ability to work mathematicallyand strategically. Students will apply their knowledge and skills of mathematical operations and chance and probability.
Literacy
- Teachers will demonstrate and teach strategies that will develop students' vocabulary knowledge across KLAs, spelling skills (phonological, morphemic, etymological, visual) and dictionary skills.
- Students will be involved in activities that will engage them in substantive communication around words and mathematical problem solving.
- Parents will see the value of integrated, relevant teaching of literacy and numeracy skills, the clear link between children's everyday lives and the constant need to use literacy and numeracy to operate in the community.

- Schools in the Dubbo, Bourke and Warrumbungle districts will be encouraged to enter a competition to illustrate this year's theme using digital literacy.
- Consultants will support schools in providing staff with knowledge about using Photostory for literacy/numeracy activities
- Students may use PowerPoint, Photostory or though other visual images (photographs, etc) supported with written texts to illustrate this year's theme
- All participants to receive a Certificate of Commendation and prizes will be given to a Stage 3 and a Stage 4 student in both districts
- Teachers will be invited to attend a workshop about using digital literacy in the classroom at the venue where the students' work will be displayed

- Sponsorship for further prizes is being sought through Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club
