2006 New South Wales Regional Initiatives:
Region: Hunter and Central Coast

Initiative:

  • Twelve schools who submitted NLNW applications to create displays, including a 'poster walk', for other schools to view at regional workshop on successful practice

Target audience:

Other regional schools, K-12 and parents

Anticipated outcomes

  • Public recognition and acknowledgement of school community achievements.

 
Region: Illawarra and South East

Initiative

  • Chain Story Writing to be conducted in shopping centres across the region
  • Numeracy activities including interactive whiteboard for public viewing

Target audience:

Community and 5-9

Anticipated outcomes

  • Importance and development of literacy promoted in the community
  • Creative student engagement
  • Community insight into numeracy concepts.

 
Region: New England

Initiative and target audience:

  • Creation and production of K-6 Numeracy Take-home Packs
    - K-6 and parents
  • Small School Maths Problem-solving and Challenge Days
    - K-6
  • Regional Sudoku Championship
    - 5-10 and parents
  • Regional Junior Bush Poet Championship
    - K-10 and parents
  • Regional Celebration of literacy and numeracy
    - K-10, parents and teachers

Anticipated outcomes

  • Improved student learning outcomes through engagement in numeracy activities using literacy and community involvement
  • Improved student engagement in numeracy activities and professional learning for teachers.

 
Region: North Coast

Initiative and target audience:

  • Three writing workshops to develop skills with published authors. Final work to be published in an anthology
    - Talented students 3 -10
  • Afternoon workshops addressing needs of students and encouraging engagement and involvement
    - Parents, teachers and other community members

Anticipated outcomes

  • Improved student writing to meet writing outcomes in Syllabus.

 
Region: Northern Sydney

Initiative:

  • Noisy Numbers Podcast Show (- podcasting a mathematical scenario for an imaginary radio show that brings the pages of textbooks to life) - a rich numeracy, literacy and ICT task

Target audience:

K-10, Parents

Anticipated outcomes

  • Develop students' literacy skills through performing arts
  • Develop ICT skills
  • Develop use of mathematical terminology and conventions.

 
Region: South Western Sydney

Initiative:

  • Everything's a Maths Problem - a theme for print, visual and multimodal texts - eventual celebration in NLNW
  • Publication of winning texts
  • Bilingual and home language texts to be submitted as well as English

Target audience:

K-12, parents and community groups

Anticipated outcomes

  • Improve students' visual, multimodal and literacy skills around mathematical concepts
  • Heighten students' awareness of the prevalence of mathematics in their everyday lives
  • Improve students' skills in solving mathematical problems
  • Improve teachers' integration of ICT
  • Promote NLNW across the region.

 
Region: Sydney

Initiative:

  • Literacy and numeracy project - various activities to promote understanding and interrelatedness of literacy and numeracy.

Target audience:

5-10

Anticipated outcomes

  • Promote awareness of literacy and numeracy interrelationships
  • Teachers learn and use more strategies for teaching literacy and numeracy using a common set of resources
  • Students develop real world understandings of literacy and numeracy, especially current events reported in the media
  • ICT skills to be enhanced or developed.

 
Region: Western NSW

Initiative and target audience:

  • Digital literacy competition called 'Learning Together' in Bathurst and Orange districts. Students to use Photostory, PowerPoint or other visual images
    - Stages 3 and 4
  • Celebration for award winners
    -Parents, other community members, sponsors and teachers
  • Teacher workshop using digital literacy
    -Teachers in Orange and Bathurst

Anticipated outcomes

  • Develop students' digital literacy skills.
  • Encourage students to use a range of digital literacy skills.
  • Showcase skill development to community members.
  • Provide teachers with strategies and skills to use digital literacies in their classrooms.

 
Region: Western Sydney

Initiative:

  • Data analysis from high-performing schools in region from state-wide testing in literacy and numeracy.
  • Event for recognition of schools throughout the region - presentation, media promotion, children's author as guest speaker.

Target audience:

K-12 and community

Anticipated outcomes

  • Promotion and showcasing of literacy and numeracy achievements with region
  • Increased public awareness of NLNW and regional schools - successes and achievements.
