Quirindi High School

Quirindi High School receiving award from the Minister
Quirindi High School is located in the New England Tablelands. In 2002, 384 students were enrolled, with 21% Aboriginal students. With the birth of the Literacy Strategy, our high school responded with an enthusiastic Literacy Team. Poor English Language and Literacy Assessment results in 1998 motivated our school to begin with the current Year 7 cohort.
We looked closely at the needs of this group, seeking outside support, and researching other successful programs. Since the implementation of a needs-based program for these students, each new cohort entering the school has shown significant improvement in a range of assessment data.
Our school has recently undertaken a linkages program with local primary schools to further maximise literacy learning and aid transition into Year 7.
