May 2008

National Reading Day - 3 September 2008 (pdf 2708KB)
You are invited to be involved in National Reading Day - a key event of National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Excellent teaching resources, fantastic networking opportunities and great prizes are available to schools who share their responses online to the 2008 National Reading Day question: What are you reading today? For more information, link to: http://nationalreadingday.nlnw.edu.au/

Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Competition (pdf 154KB)
The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards is the oldest and largest poetry competition for school students in Australia. It offers opportunities for students to use their imagination and to be inspired to express their thoughts creatively through poetry while celebrating the legendary work of Dorothea Mackellar, author of the famous poem My Country. It is a unique national event, giving Australia’s young people a voice and an opportunity to strive for excellence in literature. For more information, link to: http://www.dorothea.com.au/

April 2008
  1. Grants of up to $1,000 will be offered to individual Government and Catholic schools, regions and dioceses for projects that demonstrate best practice in literacy and/or numeracy teaching. Products from the initiatives will be made available to others via the National Literacy and Numeracy Week website after September. (Click on the Grants link for more information.)

The Association of Independent Schools will offer non-competitive celebration grants to allow opportunities to highlight NLNW across independent schools.

  2. A series of videos will be available online during August and September. An array of topics in the videos will offer opportunities for parents and teachers to explore ideas about literacy and numeracy.

As a progressive lead-up to NLNW, the videos will each be 'live' online over several days accompanied by an online discussion with 'experts' in the field to moderate and respond to questions or discussion items.

Thereafter the videos will become asynchronous and be readily available to anyone at anytime, including people in rural and remote areas. By 1-7 September, all of the videos will be available on the NSW website.

  3. A series of audiofiles will be created for parents/carers to listen to or download to their MP3s/iPods. These short audiofiles will offer ideas for parents to build their child's literacy and/or numeracy skills while doing such family-orientated activities as shopping, watching television, using the computer.

Five audiofiles that offer suggestions for children in the Early Years of schooling and five for Middle Years students will be created and made available in the week prior to and during NLNW.
