Grants for Government and Catholic schools/regions/dioceses

Applications are invited for grants of up to $1000 for individual Government and Catholic schools, regions or dioceses to participate in 2009 National Literacy and Numeracy Week. The Week will have a focus on parents, teachers and members of the community supporting young people to develop strong literacy and numeracy skills.

The judging panel will be looking for innovative projects that demonstrate best practice in literacy or numeracy. It is intended that the product from your initiative be made available to others via the National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) website: http://www.nlnw.nsw.edu.au.

Schools or Regions not submitting their final report from a previous year will be ineligible for a grant.

Some ideas for a grant:

  • create a literacy or numeracy project for a class, a year, a particular group of students
  • develop a unit of work that incorporates ICT and literacy or numeracy
  • develop a unit of work that extends students' literacy or numeracy learning within a subject context
  • create a DVD of members of the community coming into the classroom (after school approval) to share how their cultural experiences have influenced their literacy or numeracy development
  • collaborate between schools on a literacy or numeracy project.

Consider how your initiative will engage students and/or parents/carers. Is your initiative sustainable and transferable across years or schools?
