State Excellence and Achievement Awards 2004

Two schools from NSW were announced as excellence winners at the National Literacy and Numeracy Week National Awards Ceremony on Friday 27 August.

Portland Central School initiated a middle schooling project to re-engage students in their learning with a relevant and challenging program, and retain students between Years 6 and 7. Students are achieving at a higher level and have higher expectations about their learning as a result of this co-operative venture between the primary and secondary staff.

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Walgett was awarded the National Non-government Schools Excellence Award for several programs in the school that support literacy and numeracy. The Aboriginal Tutorial Assistance Scheme targets the lowest 20% of Aboriginal students in each class. The Wii Guy program is run for Aboriginal children who are identified as underachieving in the classroom, but have real potential to learn and achieve success. Count Me In Too is supporting and extending students' numeration skill, The local Aboriginal dialect, Yuwaalaraay, is taught as a pilot LOTE by Aboriginal tutors. Other successful strategies include problem solving detectives, Homework centre, Problem of the Week, Maths Fun days, Home Reading Scheme and Public Speaking Festival.

On Monday 30 August, the Hon Dr Andrew Refshauge Deputy Premier, Minister for Education and Training and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs presented the NSW Awards. The Awards ceremony was held at the State Library to acknowledge these NSW excellence award winners and fifteen schools with achievement awards.

The following schools received achievement awards for the work they have done to improve the learning of students in their schools:
